Died at the home of his son, Jas. A. Hanson, at 5 o'clock Thursday evening, Jan. 20th, aged 101 years, 5 months and 11 days. Hans Hanson Habberstad was born in Eidsvold, Norway on Aug. 9th, 1801, and remained in his native country until the spring of 1861 when he came to America and settled in Houston County, Minnesota, where he was engaged in farming until the year 1897 and has since resided with his son, Jas. A. Hanson. Deceased had always been a strong and healthy man until 5 years ago, when he suffered a stroke of paralysis and lost his hearing and speech to such an extent that it was a difficult matter to converse with him, which made his life somewhat unpleasant. For the past two years he had been failing in health, but had not been confined to his bed until the last two weeks, having contracted a cold which he was not strong enough to endure and continued in a slow decline until Tues. evening when he passed to the great beyond. He was married three times and was the father of 17 children. He was a member of the Lutheran church and has led a Christian life since his boyhood. The funeral will be held this afternoon from the house, Rev. Elliott Hanson officiating and the remains will be interred in the Oakland cemetery. The following week: Martin Hanson of Davenport,, N.D., arrived in Forest City last Friday to attend the funeral of his father, the late Hans Hanson Habberstad. Additional Comments: Hans may have been born in 1811, not 1801. Father of Elizabeth "Betsey" Hanson (b. Aug 1858) who married Oliver Alden Sage (b. 1851) in Houston County, Minnesota on 16 May 1883. Betsey was Oliver's second wife. Hans' 3rd wife is buried at the Old Wilmington Church Cemetery in Wilmington Township, Houston County, MN. Her grave is unmarked but she is listed on the memorial marker for those resting in unmarked graves. She's buried as "Maria Habbestad" (1834 - 1893).
