Genevieve "Jay&" Ilene Barclay was born on Dec. 25, 1915, in her parents' home in Manly, the daughter of William H. and Ida Marie (Trebilcock) Chapman. She attended and received her education in the Manly school system, graduating from Manly High School in 1934. She was united in marriage to Paul D. Barclay on June 20, 1937, in Mason City, and they were married for 26 years. Jay was well known as Manly's local Avon Lady. She sent in her first Avon order on July 7, 1965, and continued selling Avon products throughout her cancer treatments and until her death. During those 34 years of sales, she missed only two orders. Since 1967, she was a "second mother" to several North Central Community School teachers as she primarily rented out her three apartments to teachers. She also organized the Manly Rhythm Band at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center, which played for the residents. She enjoyed people, giving gifts, music, singing, laughing, and giving of herself to others. She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the Church Alter Guild, and the church circle, all in Manly. Left to cherish Jay's memory are several nieces and nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her mother in 1918; her father in 1961; her husband in 1967; three brothers, Olwyn, Harley, and Ivan Chapman; and two sisters, Zelda Loomer and Zona Chapman who died in infancy.
