OBITUARY: Vera Evangeline Clark Blakestad, Worth County, Iowa [Northwood Anchor Newspaper online - www.northwoodanchor.com - Dec. 04, 2001] Rites Tuesday for Vera Blakestad, 99 Vera Evangeline Blakestad, 99, Northwood, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001 at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood. Funeral services were Tuesday at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with Rev. Paul Homer officiating. Interment was in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood. Family suggests memorials to Vera E. Blakestad memorial fund. Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood, was in charge of arrangements. Vera was born Nov. 1, 1902 in Farley, IA, the daughter of Frank and Abbie (Garner) Clark. She attended school in Farley and Epworth Seminary and received her BA degree from Cornell College in June 1925. Following graduation, she taught in Gibson, Oneida and Otranto, IA. She married Sophus Blakestad Sept. 27, 1930 at Webster City. The couple resided in Norwalk where Sophus was high school principal, later moving to the Blakestad farm near Otranto and in the fall of 1939, to Northwood. She resumed teaching again for a period of time during World War II at Northwood High School. She was a long-time members of First Lutheran Church and very active in earlier years serving on many church organizations in various capacities. She enjoyed working in her garden, the changing season and visiting with relatives and friends. Survivors include sons Neil Blakestad and his wife Beth, Two Harbors, MN and Wallace Blakestad and his wife Marie, Humboldt, IA; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
