OBITUARY: Brunsvold, Perley O., Worth County, Iowa [ 2 obits ] (The Northwood Anchor -- July 31, 2001) Brunsvold, Perley O. [1913-2001] Former Kensett principal, Perly Brunsvold, dies Perley O. Brunsvold, 87, died July 26 in Denton, Tex. A funeral service was held Saturday at DeBerry Funeral Directors in Denton, TX. Interment was at the Kensett Cemetery, Kensett with the Rev. Paul Holmer of the First Lutheran Church, North-wood, officiating. Memorials may be directed to the P.O. Brunsvold Scholarship Fund and sent to Mankato State University Dept. Office, MSU Box 101, P.O. Box 8400, Mankato, MN 56002-8400. Perley O. Brunsvold was born Nov. 24, 1913 in Kensett where he lived until he entered Luther College in Decorah. After graduation he returned to Kensett and began his life's work in education. He was a teacher, principal, coach and ultimately superintendent in his hometown. He moved to Mason City where he first taught and coached baseball, football and basketball at Monroe Junior High School. He moved up to the high school as athletic director, principal and superintendent of schools and director of the junior college. He took a two-year leave of absence and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He graduated with honors, earning the Outstanding Student in Education Administration Award in 1966. Two years later he joined the Education Administration Department at Mankato State University where he taught until he retired in 1979. A Perley Brunsvold Scholarship fund was established to honor his retirement. In 1936 while teaching in Kensett he married Arlene Garrett. There were three children born to this union, Brian Garrett, Michael Andrew and Dorothy Janan. In addition to his wife and children he is survived by five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He worked on many community projects and committees wherever he lived. He was a member of the Lutheran Church, served as Sunday School superintendent in Mason City, taught Sunday School 19 years, served as deacon and was on church council at each city in which he lived.
