OBITUARY: Richard Dale Slattum, Worth County, Iowa [Northwood Anchor Newspaper online - www.northwoodanchor.com - Dec. 04, 2001] Memorial services for Slattum Richard D. Slattum, 73, of Joice, IA, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001 at his home. Memorial services Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice with Rev. Bill Peters officiating. Burial was at Concordia Cemetery in rural Joice. Richard Dale Slattum died on Nov. 27, 2001 at his home in rural Joice where he was born on March 28, 1928, the son of Clarence G. and Lillie (Wogen) Slattum. He attended Clark School in Bristol Township until 8th grade and graduated from Joice High School in 1945. He enlisted and served in the United States Navy. Richard married Janell Tweed on Dec. 19, 1948 at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church in rural Joice. After attending Iowa State University, he returned to the Slattum farm in rural Joice. He farmed for many years, and then worked at Farmers Savings Bank in Joice. Richard was an active member of Beaver Creek Lutheran Church in rural Joice where he was baptized and confirmed. Later he was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice. He served as Vice President of the Iowa Farmers Union and was also a member of the American Legion, first in Joice and later in the Otto Chose Post #235 in Lake Mills. Richard enjoyed spending time at Pelican Lake in northern Minnesota with family and friends. He also enjoyed following his favorite sports teams, particularly the Iowa State Cyclones. Richard is survived by his daughters Amy and her husband Jim Twetten of Ames, IA; Ada and her husband Mike Larson of Red Wing, MN; five grandchildren; two brothers, Cecil Slattum and his wife Barbara; Darrel Slattum and his wife Mary; three sisters, Verna and her husband Floyd Skellenger; Shirley and her husband Kenneth Chodur; and Norma and her husband Jerry Alvey. He is survived by several brothers and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lillie Slattum, wife Janell, and son Jeffrey.
