OBITUARY: James Herman Tanner 1929-2001, Worth County, Iowa [Northwood Anchor Newspaper online - www.northwoodanchor.com - 11/13/2001] Monday services held for James Tanner, 71 James Herman Tanner, 71, Northwood, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001 at his home of cancer. A funeral service was held on Monday at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer and the Rev. Allan Stoa officiating. Interment was at Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood. Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood, was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Dialysis Center, at the West Campus of Mercy Medical Center, through the Mercy Foundation. Jim was born Dec. 18, 1929 in Eagle Grove, IA, to Frank and Katherine (Wooster) Tanner. He graduated from Eagle Grove Community School in 1947 and then attended Eagle Grove Community College. He earned a football scholarship to Westmar College, where he later graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. Jim married Helen Torkelson on Nov. 17, 1950 in Humboldt, IA. He taught in the Ayrshire and Odebolt-Arthur Community Schools before earning his Masters Degree in Education from the University of South Dakota. Jim became principal for the Boone Valley Community Schools in Renwick, IA and then the Northwood-Kensett Community Schools. During his career as an educator, Jim also coached football, baseball, and girls and boys basketball. During the summertime and after his retirement from education, Jim worked as a crop adjuster for Rain and Hail Insurance, American Agriculture Insurance, and Great American Insurance. Jim enjoyed playing, coaching, and watching sports, hunting, fishing, and gardening. He loved having his family around him and was especially proud of his four granddaughters. Jim was a faithful member of First Lutheran Church, serving on church council and ushering for many years. Jim is survived by his wife of 50 years, Helen, of Northwood; one son, Jim Tanner and Arlene Rosdahl, of Northwood; three daughters, Susan Tanner of Northwood, Sandy and Marty Aves of Manly and Sherry Tanner of Glenwood, IA, and four granddaughters, Kristine and Steve Lentz of Mason City, Jaime Tanner of Atlanta, GA, and Allison and Joanna Aves of Manly. He is also survived by two brothers, Frank Jr. and Vernice Tanner of Eagle Grove and Fred and Lucille Tanner of Hartley, IA, two sisters, Margaret and Don Martin of Eagle Grove and Marna Juvenal of Des Moines, and numerous nieces and nephews.
