Herman Johannes Hempen was born on May 23, 1906, in Dike, the son of Johan and Rena (Saathoff) Hempen. He attended and received his education in the rural country schools near Dike. He was united in marriage to Annie Justina Gerloff on Dec. 29, 1931, in the Lincoln Center Christian Reform Church in Grundy Center, by the Rev. Sherman. She preceded him in death on July 15, 1994. After their marriage, they farmed in the Grundy County area for 20 years until moving to the Northwood area in 1952, continuing to farm three miles south of town until retiring from farming in 1972. After his retirement, he became a full-time carpenter, and once again a hired hand on other farms, moving into Northwood in December of 1981. He enjoyed having coffee at the Corner Post Restaurant in Northwood, enjoyed keeping up to date with the news in and around Northwood, going to Hanlontown's Threshing Days, auctions and farming, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and relatives and visiting with his friends and neighbors. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and trustee in his congregation until his death, a former member of the Lincoln Christian Reform Church in Grundy Center, Bolan United Methodist Church, and was former church treasurer in Bolan. In his early years, he was the county school director. Left to cherish his memory is a son, Harlan Hempen of Cedar Falls; four daughters, Marrian ``Penny'' Bradwell and her husband, Robert, of Hot Springs, Ark.; Arvilla ``Ann'' Young and her husband, Darrell, of Seattle, Wash.; Ruth Grosland and her husband, Paul, of Austin, Minn., and Linda Loken and her husband, Ronald, of Northwood; 10 grandchildren, Connie Bowers of Norfolk, Neb.; David Hempen of Cedar Falls; Linsley Bradwell of Hot Springs, Ark.; Jodene Black of Olympia, Wash.; Kim Crotty of Seattle, Wash.; Troy Young of Seattle, Wash.; Daniel Grosland of Owatonna, Minn.; Michelle Phillips of Bloomington, Minn.; Rodney Loken of Northwood, and Robin Hopperstad of Northwood; 10 great-grandchildren, one brother, Albert Hempen and his wife, Charlotte, of Cedar Falls; one sister, Henrietta Kruger and her husband, John, of Grundy Center; and one brother-in-law, Henry Gerloff and his wife, Arvilla, of New Hartford; several nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and friends. Besides his wife, Annie Justina Hempen, who died on July 15, 1994, he was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter; one brother, Raymond, who died in infancy; a twin sister, Jenny Emkes in 1991; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Hempen.
