OBITUARY: Herman William Hartwig Kohnke, Worth County, Iowa Herman William Hartwig Kohnke [The Northwood Anchor online - www.northwoodanchor.com - March 19, 2002] Herman William Hartwig Kohnke, 61, Lyle, MN, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002 at his home in Lyle. Funeral services were Friday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Lyle with Rev. Barbara Shea officiating. Interment was at Osage Cemetery, Osage, with military honors by Lyle American Legion Post 105. Herman was born April 25, 1941 to Herman and Elsa (Pruter) Kohnke in Postville, IA. He lived in the Postville and Manly areas until the age of 12. He attended schools in Manly and Mona and graduated from Lyle High School in 1959. Herman entered the U.S. Army in July 25, 1961, serving in Germany with 595th Transportation Company for two years and being honorably discharged on July 10, 1964. After the service he started farming and driving truck. Later years he was farming south of Otranto. A member of Mona Lutheran Church and Lyle American Legion Post 105, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and being with friends. Survivors include his son, Jay (Shelly) Kohnke of Austin; grandson Nathan Kohnke of Austin; mother, Elsa Kohnke of Osage; brother John (Pauline) of Glenville and two nieces.
