OBITUARY: Hazel Pearl (Gallion) Vansteenburg, Worth County, Iowa Hazel Pearl Gallion Vansteenburg [The Northwood Anchor online - March 12, 2002 - www.northwoodanchor.com] Hazel Pearl Vansteenburg, 80, of Battle Lake, MN, formerly of Northwood and Manly, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at her home in Battle Lake, MN. Funeral services were Monday at the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly with Rev. Robert Cumings officiating. Burial was in the Manly Cemetery. Hazel Pearl Vansteenburg was born on May 4, 1921, the daughter of William and Bertha (Cookman) Gallion. She attended and received her education in the Manly Public school system, graduating Valedictorian of class in 1939. She also attended and graduated from Hamilton Business College in Mason City, graduating in the top 10 of her class. She married Barton Vansteenburg of Jacobson, MN on Sept. 2, 1943. After their marriage together they farmed in and around the Manly area until buying their farm south of Northwood, in 1956. Hazel worked as an accountant at various firms in the North Iowa area until moving to Wahpeton, ND, in 1974, becoming head bookkeeper for Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative until her retirement in 1988. Hazel and Barton have enjoyed traveling to all 50 states and Europe. They have enjoyed their home on Silver Lake near Battle Lake, MN, and their winter home in Bradenton, FL. Hazel liked to read and crochet. She made many beautiful afghans, and also wrote stories and poetry when she was younger and once won a prize for a poem she had written. Hazel enjoyed visiting and having her grandchildren and great-grandchildren visit. She was a lifetime member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly, and attended the Ottertail United Methodist Church where she was active in the United Methodist Women's organization. She enjoyed making crafts for the church bazaar and other events. She and Barton also enjoyed going to the Battle Lake Senior Citizens Center. Hazel is survived by her husband of 58 years, Barton Vansteenburg; one son, Jeffrey Vansteenburg and his wife Heidi of Northwood; a daughter, Katha Neese and her husband Michael of Breckenridge, MN, and a daughter, Raejean Toledo and her husband Dan of Clovis, NM; nine grandchildren, Tracy and Jennifer Huizel, Krista Huizel, Jaime, David and Kaia Neese, Hannah and Jessica Vansteenburg, and Heather Bruner; two great-grandchildren, Megan Huizel and Nichole Hobson; two sisters, Violet Vansteenburg and Edna Tietz both of Manly; many nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, one infant son, her brother Roy Gallion, and two sisters, Mildred Fread and Lucille Hoyt.
