OBITUARY: Ileen Ruth (Gaarder) Torvik, 1926-2003, Worth Co., Iowa [ Northwood Anchor online - circa Mar 19, 2003 - www.northwoodanchor.com ] Ileen Ruth (Gaarder) Torvik Ileen Ruth (Gaarder) Torvik died Thursday, March 13, 2003 at her home in Decorah at the age of 76, of cancer. Ileen was born Aug. 15, 1926 to Hilmen Otto and Inga Adelia (Tenold) Gaarder in Kensett, IA. She was baptized at First Lutheran Church in Northwood, IA in September of 1926. She graduated from Kensett High School with the class of 1944 and went on to earn her B.A. in Education at Luther College in 1948. She married James R. Torvik on Dec. 28, 1948 at First Lutheran Church in Northwood. To this union three sons and one daughter were born: Stephen, Jay, Ross and Randeen. Ileen was a high school teacher in Sherburn, MN (from 1948 to 1949), Spring Grove, MN (from 1962 to 1965), and Calmar, IA (from 1965 to 1989) where she taught P.E. at South Winneshiek High School and was the girl's golf coach and cheerleader advisor. She belonged to First Lutheran Church in Decorah, Silvercrest Golf & Country Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was also an avid supporter of the Decorah Swim Team. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, James on March 14, 1987. She is survived by her son, Stephen of Columbus, OH, and his children, Ryan, Nathaniel and Nicholas; her son Jay (and his special friend, Beth Bergman) of Decorah, IA; her son Ross (Karen) of Columbus, OH and their children, Alia and Benjamin; her daughter, Randeen Torvik Ragan (Frank) of Austin, TX; her committed partner and best friend, Jerry Bernatz of Decorah, IA; her brother, Hoyt (Thelma) Gaarder of Sibley, IA; her brother, Donald Gaarder of Kensett, IA; her sister, Audrey Jean Appel of Oregon, WI; and by several nieces and nephews.
