OBITUARY: Nellie (Ellen) Mahar (or Maher), 1859-1940, Worth Co., Iowa [Northwood Graphic, 9/18/1940] Nellie (Ellen) Mahar Mrs. Nellie (Ellen) Mahar (81) died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jesse Chilson, Mason City on Friday (Graphic 9-18-1940). She had been visiting her daughter two weeks. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. J. E. Slowey and burial in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery. Nellie Gilchrist was born January 29, 1859 in LaSalle Co., Illinois. She had been a school teacher. She married Patrick Mahar on November 28, 1888. For 29 years she helped her husband on the farm east of town. In 1917 Mr and Mrs. Mahar retired and moved to Lake Mills. She is survived by her son John, Lake Mills; two daughters, Angela Chilson, Mason City and Rose Marie Victoria, Aurora, Illinois; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Betty and Evelyn Myers, Woden; Shirley and Robert Stevens, Mason City. She was preceded in death by her husband who died September 13, 1926, son James and two daughters, Mrs. Ray Valley and Lenora Mahar.
