OBITUARY: Amanda Haugo Thoe 1921-2003, Worth Co., Iowa [Northwood Anchor online - posted ~Mar. 13, 2003 - www.northwoodanchor.com] Amanda Thoe A memorial service in celebration of the life of Amanda Thoe, 82, of Magalia, CA, will be held at Paradise Lutheran Church, 780 Luther Drive, Paradise, CA 95969 at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2003. She died March 6, 2003 from complications of a long battle against the ravages of Alzheimer's Disease at Paradise, CA. She was born on her parent's family farm in Worth County, Iowa, on Feb. 23, 1921 to Ole and Anne Haugo, the ninth of ten children. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in which she had great strength throughout her life. She was active in serving in the many churches to which she belonged including singing in choirs for over 65 years. She graduated from Lake Mills High School, Lake Mills, IA with the class of 1940 followed with a year at Luther College, Decorah, IA before attending the Grant Hospital School of Nursing, Chicago, IL, where she graduated in 1943 and became a registered nurse. She married Robert Thoe on June 9, 1943 at Annapolis, MD. As a Navy wife, she took what became a permanent sabbatical leave from professional nursing after bearing her first child in 1945 to become a full time mother of her four children and homemaker for her naval officer husband and family. This led her to call her home in places of Iowa, Florida, Maryland, Virginia, Connecticut, Minnesota, California, Texas, Republic of Panama, and Bermuda, British West Indies. She was well known for her sense of humor, cooking and entertaining skills, and loving care for those in need. She was a workaholic and especially loved gardening and landscaping. She particularly enjoyed studying the Bible, collecting early American antiques, reciting poetry, playing bridge, golf, and braiding wool rugs through which she won blue ribbons for creative art at local fairs. Her priorities were God, family, and people. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Torjus Haugo of Lake Mills, IA, Ted Haugo of Lake Mills, IA, and Harold Haugo of Kasson, MN; four sisters, Amanda Haugo of Lake Mills, IA, Ruth Vail of Lawrenceburg, IN, Thora Harmon Larson of Tacoma, WA, and Agnes Douglas of Lake Mills, IA, and grandson Augustus Amandus Thoe of Stamsund, Norway. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Bob, of Magalia, CA, three sons, Bob and wife, Betty of Livermore, CA, Scott and wife, Vebjorg of Stamsund, Norway, John and wife, Nan Drake of Seattle, WA, and daughter Annie Thoe of Seattle, WA; a sister Rachel Brunsvold and her husband, Eldren, of Kensett, IA, a brother Walter Haugo and his wife, Mary Jo, of Litchfield, MN, four grandchildren, and one great-grand daughter. Memorial contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund at Paradise Lutheran Church, 780A Luther Drive, Paradise, CA 95969, or the Alzheimer's Association, 780B Luther Drive, Paradise, CA 95969. Inurnment of her ashes are being held to be mixed with those of her husband upon his death with disposition to be decided at that time.
