OBITUARY: David Gilman Helgeland, 1910-2003, Worth County, Iowa [ Northwood Anchor online - May 14, 2003 - www.northwoodanchor.com ] David Gilman Helgeland David Gilman Helgeland, 92, of Northwood, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood. Funeral services were Monday at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with Rev. Allan Stoa officiating. Following the services and according to his wishes cremation will take place with graveside inurnment services at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2003, at the North Shell Rock Cemetery, rural North-wood. Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood, was in charge of arrangements. David Gilman Helgeland was born on July 16, 1910, in rural Heartland Township, rural Northwood, the son of Sever S. and Andrena (Tenold) Helgeland. He was baptized, and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation on May 18, 1924, at the Shell Rock Lutheran Church in Northwood. He attended and received his education in the Northwood school system, graduating from Northwood High School in 1928. After completing his schooling he helped his parents on the family farm in rural Northwood. In 1934 he joined the U.S. Postal service and was employed with the postal service until his retirement in 1974. He married Mildred Nelson on May 24, 1937, at the Lutheran parsonage in Northwood. She preceded him in death on Dec. 5, 1980. He married Kristine Ellingson Noble on May 24, 1986, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Mounds, MN. She preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 1996. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood and the Elk's Lodge in Albert Lea. Left to cherish his memory his son, Rev. Mark Helgeland and his wife Pauline of Byron, MN, and daughter, Judi Helgeland of Byron, MN, one grandson, Andrew Helgeland of Byron, MN, a step-daughter, Barbara Stevens of Combine, TX; three step-grandchildren, Lisa, Lori, Christine, six step-great-grandchildren; Rachel, Sadie, Abigail, Trevor, Cayle, and Joshua; one brother, Kermit Helgeland and his wife Wilma of Sun City, AZ; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. His parents, two wives, Mildred and Kristine; and three sisters, Elma Monson, Stella Moen and Luella Hubbard, preceded him in death.
