OBITUARY: Doris E. Kenison Steiger 1915-2003, Worth Co., Iowa [ Northwood Anchor online - circa Mar. 26, 2003 www.northwoodanchor.com ] Doris E. Steiger Doris E. Steiger, 87, of Mason City, formerly of Kensett, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City. Her funeral service was Saturday at the Bolan United Methodist Church, with Rev. Robert Cumings officiating. Interment followed at Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood. Memorials may be directed to the Doris E. Steiger Memorial Fund. Doris was born May 22, 1915 to Lewis C. and Louise (Stehn) Kenison and was baptized on Sept. 19, 1915 at her family home. She attended rural schools near Kensett and graduated from Kensett High School in 1933 as the valedictorian of her class. She then graduated from Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls with a teaching degree and a principal's certificate. She taught school in rural Kensett and in Carpenter following her graduation. Doris married Glennis H. Steiger on Aug. 31, 1943 at Bethel Evangelical Church in Manly. They farmed for 17 years on the Steiger farm in Bolan before moving to the Kenison farm east of Kensett, where Doris dearly loved to be. Doris was very active in her community as a 4-H leader, a member of the Worth County Historical Society and the Kensett Senior Citizens, a member of the Election Board for Kensett Township for over 20 years, and a Bolan news correspondent for 25 years. She also was a member of the Worth County Cancer Society board, receiving an award for 35 years of service. Doris loved music, playing the flute from high school band to college orchestra and also singing in the Worth County Chorus. Her faith and her church were important to Doris and she held various offices in the UMW, was a member of the church choir, taught Sunday school for many years, and assisted her husband as church treasurer for 50 years. The Bolan United Methodist Church family was very special to her and will miss her dearly. Doris was an excellent homemaker, baker, and seamstress. Many family members and friends received gifts of her handiwork, especially her lovely baby quilts. With her gentle, patient nature, she was always doing things for others and taking loving care of her family, especially at the time of her daughter's death. Doris will be greatly missed by her daughter, Mary Ann and her husband, Steven E. Wendt, of Mason City, four grandchildren, Sarah Meyer-Reyerson and her husband, Jason, of Shell Rock, Carrie Meyer of Osage and her fiance, Nick Sparrow, of Manly, Thomas R. Meyer of Kensett, and Alyssa Wendt of Mason City, two great-grandchildren, Grace Reyerson and Thomas Krebsbach, a son-in-law, Thomas E. Meyer of Clear Lake, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins and many friends who were all very special to her. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Glennis, in October 2000, a daughter, Catherine Louise Meyer, in August 1984, a brother Keith Kenison, and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
