OBITUARY: Bruce O. Smith Jr., 1920-2003, Worth County, Iowa

                             Bruce O. Smith Jr.
                              
Memorial service for Bruce O. Smith Jr., 82, of Northwood, were held Friday 
at Asbury United Methodist Church in Lake Mills with Pastor Jeanne Martin 
officiating. Burial was at Sunnyside Cemetery, Lake Mills. Bruce Smith passed 
away Tuesday, May 06, 2003, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason 
City. Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, was in charge of arrangements. 

Bruce O. Smith, Jr. was born Oct. 30, 1920 in Buffalo Center, IA, the son of 
Bruce and Martha (Doege) Smith, Sr. and was baptized and confirmed at the 
United Methodist Church in Thompson, IA. He is a member of Asbury Methodist 
Church in Lake Mills, IA. Bruce received his elementary education in rural 
schools in the Woden and Thompson areas and attended Thompson High School. 

In 1942, he entered the United States Army where he trained as a medic and 
served in the European Theatre during World War II. He was awarded the European 
Theatre Ribbon, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medals. He was a 
Staff Sergeant in the 95th Infantry (Victory) Division. 

He married Lillian Steven on March 4, 1943 at the Methodist parsonage in Albert 
Lea, MN. To this union three sons were born: Robert, Richard and David. After 
Bruce's discharge from the Army, he farmed in the Leland, Joice and Kensett 
areas before buying a farm near Northwood. After he retired from farming in 
1988, he had a lawnmower and small engine repair shop until 2002. Bruce worked 
for the ASCS office in Northwood and various other places while he was farming. 
Besides his family, he enjoyed fishing, woodworking and jigsaw puzzles. 

He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 60 years, Lillian of 
Northwood, IA; sons: Robert (Pam) Smith of Comanche, IA; Richard (Renee) Smith 
of Chester, IA; and David Smith of San Francisco, CA; brothers: Harold 
(Donnabelle) Smith of Scarville, IA; Russell (Verle) Smith of Graettinger, 
IA; and Donald (Janice) Smith of Lake Mills, IA; sisters: Marjorie Dann of 
Albert Lea, MN; Darlene Langfald of Emmons, MN; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy 
Smith of Woodburn, OR; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several 
nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Bruce was preceded in death by his 
parents; one brother, Burnell; one daughter-in-law, Susann Smith; and one 
great-granddaughter, Megan Barr.
