OBITUARY: Alice Noreen (Anderson) Whitcome, 1911-2003, Worth Co., Iowa [ Northwood Anchor online - www.northwoodanchor.com - circa Mar. 26, 2003 ] Alice Noreen Whitcome Alice Noreen Whitcome, 92, of Northwood, died Monday, March 17, 2003, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood. Funeral services were Thursday at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with Rev. Paul Holmer officiating. Burial was in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood. Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood, was in charge of the arrangements. Alice Noreen Whitcome was born on Feb. 8, 1911, in rural Worth County near Northwood, the daughter of Charles and Ida (Anderson) Anderson. She was baptized on March 12, 1911, and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation in the Lutheran faith on May 11, 1924. She attended and received her education in the Northwood School system, graduating from Northwood High School. She married Ellsworth Whitcome in 1929, in Albert Lea, MN. He preceded her in death in May 1951. After their marriage they moved to Toledo, OH and also lived in Ft. Wayne, IN, Northwood, Manchester, IA, and Grand Island, NE before moving to Blooming Prairie, MN where they owned and operated a hotel and restaurant before moving back to Northwood where Alice worked as a secretary for many years for the Northwood Community Schools until her retirement. She enjoyed bingo, fishing, bridge, and was an excellent seamstress, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren. Alice loved her church and was a very active member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood, was a former member of the Stewardship Committee at First Lutheran Church, and belonged to and was Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star in Northwood. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Roger Whitcome and his wife Lola of Grundy Center, IA, Charles Whitcome and Carol of International Falls, MN, and Ruth (Whitcome) Zamora of New Orleans, Louisiana; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Chester Anderson of Kensett; as well as other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ellsworth in May 1951, three brothers, Clayton, Glenn, and Russell Anderson, two sisters, Doris Barker and Clarice Perry, and a special family friend, Eileen Mantz.
