A pioneer of this great and good state, after a residence within its borders of 50 years, departed this life Dec.14th, 1903, at the home of his son, Byron Kenison, near Bolan, Worth county, Iowa, at the advanced age of 88 years, 3 months and 14 days. He was born August 20th, 1815, near Chateaugay, Franklin county, New York, where he grew to a sturdy manhood amid the privations and hardships of that pioneer day. He was married in 1839 to Sarah Ann Chase, and together they began the battles of life and the rearing of a home that would be an honor to their country. To them were born nine children of whom three have passed to the great beyond. In 1850 the family left their native home and emigrated by the primitive methods of that day to the then far western country Illinois. In 1853 they pushed still farther westward and settled in Allamakee county, Iowa, and later in Blackhawk county; then Grundy and last in Butler county, where the wife and mother died and was buried, in 1866, at the age of 50 years. In each of these places new homes were started and the virgin forests and prairie soil resounded with the ringing of the ax and lowing of the oxen as they turned the rich soil bringing fruit to the incessant labor of these hardy pioneers. During his residence in Grundy county he answered the call of his country and spent eighteen months in helping to subdue the rebellion. In 1882, Mr. Kenison came to live with his son Byron in Worth county, where he has since resided. Four sons, two daughters, twenty-nine grandchildren, fourteen great- grandchildren besides many other relatives mourn the loss of him who has departed. He was a man esteemed and respected by all who knew him. The funeral took place at the home and was conducted by Rev. A.B. Curran, pastor of the Methodist church at Northwood, and Rev. E.H. Heverly, pastor of the United Evangelicag church at Bolan. Those from a distance to attend the funeral were Matt Kenison and wife and Ed Kenison and family, of Mason City. Two sons and two daughters were unable to be present. E.H.H.. Source : Worth County Index . Scammon & Gillkup, Publishers . Volume 23, Number 3, Page 8, Column 3 . Thursday, 24 December 1903 .
