T. Doughty Perish in Burning House The saddest and most distressing calamity that ever befell the Council country occurred Saturday night about 10 o'clock when the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Doughty was burned to the ground and their two children perished in the flames. The origin of the fire is not definitely known but was either from a defective flue or the explosion of a lamp. Mrs. Doughty had bathed and put to bed upstairs the oldest child age about two years and had come down stairs to prepare the water for the other baby's bath when she had occasion to leave the room in which it was lying in its crib for a moment. When she returned the room was a mass of flames and the cruel tongues of fire were already wrapping the little one in their embrace. Distracted with terror and grief she ran screaming for help from the house. Mr. Doughty was at Sam Criss's store where he is employed and which is but a couple blocks from his home and in an incredibly short time was on the scene. But before he arrived the whole lover story was burning and entrance to the house on the ground floor was impossible. Placing a ladder to an upper window he went into the house and made a desperate effort to reach the child that was upstairs. His efforts were without avail and turning to the window he pitched head long to the ground almost suffocated with heat and smoke. Men standing by caught him as he fell and saved him from injury by the fall. It is more than probable that both children were dead before anyone arrived at the fire and they likely died from suffocation, quickly and without pain. Both parents were restrained with difficulty from rushing back into the flames in the vain hope of rescuing their babies indeed the ordeal of standing helpless while the little bodies were incinerated tried sorely the souls of the friends and neighbors who gathered about the burning building and tears streamed down the cheeks of strong men as they realized their utter helplessness to assisted the distracted parents. Both little bodies were recovered Sunday morning and placed in one casket and buried together Monday at the Kesler cemetery. A beautiful and touching funeral service was conducted by Rev. Stover at the Congregational church. In the great bereavement that has come upon Mr. and Mrs. Doughty they have the sincere sympathy of the entire community and were it possible for human help to make lighter their burden of grief, loving hearts would gladly share their sorrow and would help in their greatest trial. The great consolation, the only consolation that can come to them that can ease the pangs of anguish is the blessed assurance that their babies are safe in that home where trouble and heart aches and disaster can never come and that at the longest it will be but a little while when the loving parents can again be with them, with them never again to part for the master has given the promise that we shall meet again in the eternal home beyond the grave. Card of Thanks We wish to thank our many kind neighbors and friends who so readily came to our assistance during the loss of our home and for the many kind acts and words of sympathy given us in this hour of sorrow for the loss of our little ones.
