He was born Jan. 20, 1876 at Faulk Store west of Emmett. He grew up in the Indian Valley area and was in the sheep business there until 1907. He married Mattie E. Hansen at Council, Dec. 10, 1908. The lived on a cattle ranch at Council and she preceded him in death there in 1919. He then moved to a ranch south of Payette and married Gertrude Vanderford Warnock at Nampa on Nov. 11, 1942. They made their home in Payette where they lived since that time. He continued to operate an orchard south of Payette until 1960. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Payette, an over 50-year- member of the IOOF Lodge, joining in 1908, at Council, later transferring to IOOF Lodge No. 22 at Payette where he was a past noble grand. He was active in civic activities throughout his life. Survivors include his wife, Gertrude of Payette; two sons Harold and Howard Hartley, both of Boise; a daughter Mrs. Mary Crowe, of Redding, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Mrs Ruth Bodmer of Eugene, Ore. and Mrs. Pauline Olson, Oregon Slope, Ore.; two brothers, Chet Hartley, Clatskania, Ore., and Leonard Hartley, address unknown; two sisters, Mrs. Julia Willet, Weiser, and Mrs. Kathy Holland, Pierce, Idaho; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel in Payette by the Rev. Edward McIndoo of the Ontario First Christian Church. Graveside rites will be conducted by the IOOF Lodge at 4:30 p.m. at Council. Family suggests memorials be made to a favorite charity or flowers may be sent. Note: Burial at I.O.O.F.
