Piper was accidentally shot while fishing on Lester Creek. He left home about 2 o'clock in the afternoon with a saddle horse and his dog and went to Lester creek to fish. Late in the evening his parents became uneasy as to his whereabouts and began a search. About 5 o'clock Sunday morning he was found lying dead near the creek. Tracks and indications showed that he had dismounted and was leaning over the creek gathering pennywinkles for bait when a 22 caliber single shot revolver, loaded with a 22 BB cap cartridge fell from his scabbard and struck a rock discharging it. The bullet struck him between the 4th and 5th ribs on the right side and it is supposed it penetrated the large artery lying near the back bone as indications showed that life had been taken very sudden as there were no signs of a struggle other than that he raised up and took about five steps then fell, his head striking a rock and cutting a small gash near his right eye. There were no signs of life after falling as the edge of the rock which cut the gash near his eye still remained in the gash. His dog remained with him and was lying at his back when found in the morning. His horse was found on top of the hill about a quarter of a mile from him with the reins caught on the brush. Jay Seward Piper was born at Verndale, Minn., on Nov. 7, 1891. At the age of 9 years his parents came west locating here in Council Valley. For the past two years he has been a student at the Idaho Industrial Institute at Weiser and had been home only a week. Several of his school mates came up from Weiser to attend the funeral which was held at the church Monday afternoon. A very appropriate sermon was preached by Rev. Stover, of Council. Rev. Paddock and Rev. Rexford of the Institute at Weiser of which Jay had been a student. Jay had always been a good, kindhearted boy and was loved by all who knew him. His sudden departure from this world came as a great shock to his many friends and his relatives have the sincere sympathy of the entire community. Interment was made in the Council cemetery. (Kesler Cemetery)ch Card of Thanks Words fail to express the gratitude we feel toward the kind neighbors and friends who so willingly came to our assistance during our great loss and for kind words of sympathy expressed. Kind words and deeds are never lost. And by whom they were given God speaks a cheering message now. From Him who dwells in Heaven Mr. and Mrs. S. D.
