Smith was born in Telamook, Co. Oregon about forty years ago and passed from this earth Thursday evening, March 18 at the Josephine hospital. Mr. Smith was a man of prominence in the county, having held the position of forest ranger, was a representative in the legislature of 1904 and at one time was agent of the P. & I.N. R.R. at Midvale and possesses several mining claims in this county. He also practiced law in the state of Oregon. The cause of his death was uremic poisoning. He was impressed with the efficacy of Christian Science and refused to call a physician until it was to late. When one was called it was thought best to remove the patient to the hospital. On arrival at the institution the surgeons there saw there would be no hope in an operation for the man was past human help. The remains were sent to Newberg, Oregon for burial.
