Schubert Fired Into Him, Inflicting Three Wounds, Either Of Which Would Have Been Fatal. _____________________________________ Body Lay In Street Until Coroner Arrived. __________________________ The Shooting Seemingly Was Premeditated, Quarrels in a Sheep Camp the Cause. _________________________________ Al F. Bush was instantly killed about 5 o'clock last evening by Samuel Richard Schubert, who discharged three rifle shots at him, one bullet entering the right abdomen, another over the heart and the third the left temple and passing through the brain. Either of the wounds would have been fatal. The homicide occured on the main street of Carey, near the store of the Blaine Co-operative Mercantile institotion, and Shubert went into the store, and handed his gun to someone there and said that he was ready to give himself up to the sheriff. He said that as Bush started toward him he put his right hand inside of his coat and therefore thought that Bush reaching for a gun. No gun was found on Bush. Schubert, who had been herding sheep for Bush, had some difference with him, that had not come to blows; but Schubert claimed that at the camp in the lava Bush had tried to poison him by putting poison in the sugar. Putting some of the sugar in the coffee he immediately became sick, then took a big drink of strong salt water and Sunday came to Hailey. Yesterday morning he told Sheriff Clements that Bush had telephoned Deputy Sheriff York at Carey to be on the lookout for a crazy man and to arrrest him. The sheriff referred Schubert to prosecuting Attorney Matthaei, who promised to investigate the matter and take such action as the facts warranted. During yesterday Schubert was hired by T. A. Baptie, who took him along in his car to Carey on his way home at Muldoon. A new .30 calibre Remington pump rifle that Baptie bought that morning was in the tonneau, where Schubert rode. On reaching Carey, Mr. Baptie stopped his car in front of the Co-op store and went in. Schubert immediately got out of the car and started to walk toward Muldoon, but seeing Bush a few steps away stepped back in the car, grabbed the rifle and without a word began shooting at Bush. As Mr. Baptie had not loaded the rifle it is evident that Baptie slipped in some cartridges while the car was running to Carey. Sheriff Clements and Deputy Sheriff McGowan being called by telephone, went to Carey immediately and found Schubert at the store, who surrendered himself. A loaden .38 calibre Smith & Weston Special six shooter was found on him and the Sheriff took possesion of it. The body of Bush still lay where it fell, but was covered with a blanket. On the return of the officers to Hailey last night with the prisoner, Dr. Wright was notified and he left soon after to hold an inquest. The jury was composed of T. B. Evans, A. C. Eldredge, Ira Eldredge, Edward Cameron, Everette S. Quincy and J. M. Chidester. It found that the deceased was Al. F. Bush, 55 years of age, and that he died the 22nd inst. of gunshots, and "we furthur find that we believe Sam R. Schubert to be the person by whose act the death of said A. F. Bush is occasioned." Bush was married but childless. Mrs. Bush lives on the Pete Snider ranch, near Carey Lake, almost a mile out of Carey, that Mr. and Mrs. Bush leased after their own ranch, about 20 miles east of Carey, had been sold. They had lived there 10 or 12 years.
