The preliminary heaing was begun today, and much interesting testimony was brought out, showing that the concern was deliberately sending away large quantities of goods to distant points. A letter that fell into the hands of the officers was made public today for the first time. Thisletter was unsigned and came into the officers' hands before the house of T.C. Early & Co. opened here, being put into John Early's box by mistake. It was from Los Angeles and was directed to H.E.Early, and is as folows: "Yours of the 7th, from Denver, came yesterday. Well, there seems to have been a big improvement in the prospec of the show since your last. Well, what is your plan as to the time of the wind up? Do you expect to buy a bill and pay first, or are you expecting to make the first one the last. From the size of the bill you are buying, and your brother puts in $3,000 or $4,000 in cash, and the thing runs for three or four months or till spring, it ought to be $40,000 or $50,000. I think the best plan for you will be to ship the goods to me here, as that will take them so far as to take the drummers off the track. I have all arrangements made to send them to a small town from here to be sold by my man Honary. It will add an awful freight to the goods to make three shipments of them, but I eleive it will pay better than for me to come up near there and start in. My plan is for you to ship me here, by way of Portland, and from Portland and here by steamers. Then I will ship them to Phoenix, Arizona. In that way I don't think we will have any lawsuit at the end. Do you approve of the plan or not,or do you think I had better come near to you? The doctor says that eight or ten days more will cure my fistula,so I am feeling good in mind as well as body.In shipping goods you must be very careful. Specify that they are to go from Portland to Los Angeles by steamer. You must also be very careful in making out shipping receipts. Fully half of the shipping receipts you sent out from Kansas City were not correct. Some of the goods were not mentioned in them, and some were overtime. Make yor plans to suit yourself, but post me fully." The evidence today showed that J.E.Howard, to whom the bunco store was sold a few days ago, shipped 35 cases of goods from the store during Feburary and March to John Crowe, of Reno,Nev.It also appears that several cases were shipped lat to McLain, of San Fransisco, an auctioneer. Though Howard shipped the 35 cases in his own name, he testified that he was simply acting for Early. The scheme was a barefaced robbery from its inception, and some of those who are interested in the case think the swindle will reach about $20,000.
