It is located on the west edge of the town of Hope, Bonner County, Idaho, above a large concrete retaining wall. It was also called the Chinese Cemetery but it is believed to be the original cemetery in Hope. There are seven visible fenced in burial places with no markers. They are old worn wooden picket type fences. The local folklore regarding the name Chinese Cemetery is as follows: The Chinese worked on the railroad when it was first built during the last 1800’s. Some of them that were buried there were removed to the Hope Cemetery and it is said that others were removed to San Francisco, CA and to China. Many of the sites were looted in days gone by because it was thought that there were valuable possessions buried with the bodies. However, this can’t be verified. The directions are as follows: Take Highway 200 toward Hope. Just west of Hope a business route of Highway 200 goes to your left. When you turn onto that there is a small road that goes to your immediate left and up the hill. Just up the hill is a small turnout on the right side of the roadway that you can park on. The cemetery is not seen from the roadway and is very overgrown and not cared for. Much vandalism has occurred. There are several tombstones remaining but most have been either destroyed or knocked over or unreadable due to weathering. The oldest burial appears to be E M Clark 09-14-1890. A list was also found in the cemetery files at the Bonner County Historical Museum that was from an oral history from an unknown Hope resident. This list was incorporated into this list. At the end of this list are the transcriptions of the only remaining visible tombstones. Mary and Nellie Garrison completed the transcriptions June 2001.
