He joined the United States Marine Corps and served in the Philippines in World War II. He married Joy Crowell in 1951. Don spent much of his life working in the timber industry in Kinzua, Ore. and in the Priest River/Oldtown area. He retired as a boiler operator from the Diamond/DAW mill in 1988, and was active in the VFW and DAV. Don was well- known throughout the region as a talented musician who played many instruments, including banjo, piano, mandolin, steel, and, his primary instrument, guitar, for which he is best-known and remembered. Don died at his home in Mead, Wash. on Feb. 12, 2006. He is preceded in death by five brothers, three sisters, and a great-grandchild, Jacob Lapeyre. He is survived by his wife, Joy, at the home; two sisters, Josephine Roberts and Betty Begley of Kentucky; three children, Donald (and Cynthia) Brock of Priest River; Darla (and Larry) Mason of Newport; and Melody (and Richard) Podlas of Mead; ten grandchildren: Charity (and Kenneth) Mason of Priest River; Rachael (and Glenn) Lapeyre of Spokane; Donald (and Krystiane) Brock of Coeur d'Alene; Angelina Podlas of Mead; Jeffrey Mason, Jeremy Mason, Christiana Mason, Harmony Mason, Joshua Mason, and Jonathan Mason, all of Newport; and six great- grandchildren: Gabriel, Caitlin, and Hunter Mason; Brian Ashmore, Samantha Mason, and Kadence Mason. Services will be held on Feb. 18, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Priest River. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
