"Wally" Karukes Walter R. "Wally" Karukes of Priest River, Idaho passed away at his home on Jan. 6, 2006 following a short, but courageous battle with cancer. Wally was born Aug. 5, 1938 in San Francisco, Calif. the son of Vladimir a Russian immigrant and Eunice (Coop) Karukes of Portland, Ore. In 1956 he married Lawanda Curry and from that union came three children. In 1982 he remarried Dixie Smith who preceded him in death in 1995. He then met and later married Linda Soumokil on June 9, 2001. They decided to have another adventure and bought a business in Priest River. They didn't know a single person and now it is one big family. Wally had an adventurous Spirit. He worked in Alaska for a few years, but mainly his sheetrock business kept him in the Portland-Vancouver areas. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, and watching sports. He also loved to watch Nascar and spending time with his friends and family. He never had an unkind word for anyone and it showed in the respect he received. He will be missed by all whose lives he has touched. Survivors include his wife Linda at the family home in Priest River; two daughters Tami (and John) Nordgren of Depoe Bay, Ore.; one son Jeff (and Karla) Karukes of Battle Ground, Washington and Brenda (and Audel) Maldonado of Ocean Shores, Wash. Survivors also include seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren and one sister Glenna Woodley of Kalama, Wash. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers Al and Joe Karukes.
