"Joe" Nelson Joseph L. "Joe" Nelson, 80, lifetime resident of Priest River, Idaho passed away in Spokane, Wash. Dec. 21, 2005. Joe was born Sept. 18, 1925 in Priest River, the son of Ben M. and Frances M. (Maio) Nelson. He attended schools in Priest River and left just before graduating to join the US Army. After returning from Europe Joe finished high school through correspondence courses. Joe served during WWII and spent time in Europe and Japan. On January 3, 1948 he married Velma Mae Forell at the St. Catherine's Catholic Church. He worked for several businesses in Priest River and Newport including 11 years at Diamond Match, two years at Maio Clothing Store, 11 years for Darigold and finished with over 10 years at Newport Concrete. Joe was a member of the Priest River VFW, and past charter member of the Newport Eagles. He loved hunting, camping, fishing, picking huckleberries and the outdoors. Survivors include his wife Velma at the family home; six children Michael (and Sandra) Nelson of Hayden Lake, Richard (and Dyann) Nelson of Priest River, Karen St.Andre and Diana Nelson both of Newport, John (and Nancy) Nelson and Joe Nelson all of Priest River, 22 grand children and 19 great grand. Survivors also include his sister, Gladys Dean of Elk. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Jackie Oscarson, granddaughter, Melissa Ann Nelson and grandson, Paul Poirier. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 30, 2005 at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Priest River. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
