Salerno, 79 Irene W. Salerno, 79, of Priest River, Idaho passed away in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho on her 79th Birthday following a long illness. Irene was born in Zillah, Wash. on Jan. 16, 1927 the daughter of William and Nora (Parker) Whittum. She graduated from Priest River High School in 1946. On Aug. 31, 1947 she married Stanley Salerno at the Edgemere Grange in Priest River. In 1947 the family moved to Spokane, Wash. Stanley preceded Irene in death in April 1986 and shortly after, Irene moved to Ocean Shores, Wash. Irene had lived in Priest River since January of 1999. For over 36 years Irene worked for Pacific Northwest Bell, now known as Qwest, as a telephone/switchboard operator. She loved painting, quilting, sewing, gardening, and just working around her home in her spare time. Irene took great pride in her home and wanted to make a place for anyone who came to visit would feel welcome. She was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers. Survivors include her two children, Michael (and Lynn) Salerno of Spokane, Wash. and David (and Kathleen) Salerno of Priest River, Idaho; and two grandchildren and one great grandchild. Survivors also include her brother, Walter (and Mable) Whittum of Maple Valley, Wash. Besides her parents Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley; seven brothers and three sisters. Memorial contributions in Irene's name may be made to a local Alzheimer's foundation. A Memorial Service will be at noon on Jan. 28, 2006 at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Priest River. A private family burial took place prior to the memorial service at Fairmount Memorial Park in Spokane. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
