Hazel passed very peacefully, following more than two years of treatment for Graves' disease and a series of strokes. Two and a half years ago, Hazel returned to the Puyallup area where she had lived and worked for much of her adult life, to the home of her daughter and son-in-law. Prior to her last few weeks of care, Hazel and her little dog Tyson resided for two months at Parkside East in Auburn, where she was delighted that one of her caregivers was Sandra Ortiz, fiance of her great- grandson. Born Hazel Margaret Winter in Nucla, Colorado on September 18, 1922, Hazel spent her early years in Colorado, until the family moved to Eastern Washington, where Hazel married, raising her daughter, Louise, there and in Priest River, Idaho. In 1982 Hazel moved back to Priest River, where she and Joe Naccarato, her partner in retirement--if this woman who was known throughout her life as a "little ball of energy" could ever be said to have retired--spent 20 years of enjoyment on the river. Anyone who frequented Nettie's Cafe in Puyallup during the '60s can attest to what a cheerful and hard worker Hazel always was. Raised on farm chores, she had also learned to drive early and well, and lent to the war effort by driving gasoline trucks, at age 19, in San Diego, California. Always in motion herself, Hazel deeply respected her son-in-law's ambition and was very proud of the excellent reputation Larry Ketchum built for himself in the electrical business. She was likewise gratified by the hard work of her entrepreneurial granddaughter and grandson-in-law, who have together owned and operated Evergreen State Electric in Puyallup for the past several years. Hazel was especially proud of the burgeoning radio career of her great- grandson, Justin Chamberlin, who is currently producing for Seattle radio station 107.7 "The End," and of the scholastic achievements of her great- granddaughter, Michell Chamberlin, who is in her third year at Western Washington State College in Bellingham. Preceded in death by her beloved brother, Glenn Winter, and sisters Vera Boston and Marlene Jones, Hazel is survived by her older sister, Francis Archer of Kingman, Arizona; by her daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Larry Ketchum of Puyallup, Washington; by her granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Lynda and Mitch Chamberlin of Graham, Washington; by her two great- grandchildren, Justin and Michell; by many close nieces and nephews; and by Joe Naccarato and family of Priest River, Idaho. Hazel will be remembered by her friends and family as a warm-hearted, fun- loving, strong-willed dynamo who was always busy doing something and who particularly enjoyed preparing and serving food to those she loved. In addition to the people in her life, she loved her puppies and she loved our Lord, whom she usually referred to as "the Man upstairs." The family plans a private ceremony to be held later in Priest River.
