Jack was born Nov. 8, 1921, in Northport, Wash. He grew up in several small towns in northern Idaho, as his family moved frequently seeking work during the Depression. Jack enjoyed playing sports and was quarterback of the football team in Bonners Ferry, where he graduated from high school in 1940. He attended the University of Idaho until the outbreak of World War II, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces. During flight training in California, Jack and his pilot, Raymond Beaumont, attended a live broadcast of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Jack was trained as a radar observer in the P-61 aircraft, “The Black Widow, “ flying night missions with Ray over the Philippines and New Guinea. At the end of the war, Jack moved to Spokane, Wash., where he took a job with the great Northern Railroad. Jack married the former Benicia “LaJoy” Barnes in March 1949, and raised two sons and two daughters. Jack built a 38-year career with the railroad and after lengthy stints in Spokane and Seattle he retired in 1986 to the community of Mill Creek, Wash. He enjoyed several hobbies, including woodworking and collecting Jim Beam decanter bottles. Jack is survived by a son, Dale Chervenell; two daughters, Cheryl Lindgaard and Karyn Dunn; three grandsons, Robert Chervenell, Brandon Chervenell and Zachary Dunn; five granddaughters, Chiloe Chervenell, Bridget Chervenell, Michelle Lingaard, Nicole Lindgaard and Kelsey Lindgaard; plus several great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marie Cowan of Sequim, Wash., Betty Douglas and Phyllis Collyer of Bonners Ferry; a brother, Robert Chervenell of Everett, Wash. Jack was preceded in death by his wife, LaJoy; their son, Gordon; his brother, Richard Chervenell; and his parents John and Velosta Chadek Chervenell. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5, at Evergreen-Washielli Cemetery in Seattle.
