He was born May 1, 1917 in Bridgeport, Conn. To polish immigrant parents, Mary and Vincent Ciskowski. He grew up in Chicago, IL excelled in school, went to the University of Illinois and graduated with honors in chemical engineering. While in college, he met Evelyn Taylor who was a nurse. They were married shortly after his graduation in 1838. Joe went to work as a research chemist for Merck Pharmaceutical in Rahway, NJ. When WWII broke out, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and became a troop carrier plot in the 8th Air Force. He flew many missions in Europe. After the war, he returned to New Jersey and continued his career with Merck. He was instrumental in the discovery and development of many well-known pharmaceutical and agricultural products. He retired in 1979 and moved to Boundary County. His wife of many years, Evelyn, passed away in 1984. A few years later, he met a Boundary County native, Edith Robinson. They were married in 1988 and spent many happy years together. Joe was a great scholar and a life-long lover of knowledge. He was a champion of civil rights. He greatly appreciated the outdoors and loved hunting and shooting. He was respected and loved by those who knew him. He in turn felt the same about them. He is survived by his wife, Edith; brother Adam; children Kathy, Terri and Joe, and 5 grandchildren.
