According to the Idaho State Police, Wiyanna Smith, 17, Bonners Ferry, was stopped in the middle of the intersection facing south in a 1997 Chrysler Concourse at about 5 p.m. when Ada Yoder, 59, Bonners Ferry, traveling east, came through the intersection and hit the Chrysler on the passenger side. The impact knocked the Chrysler out of the roadway and trapped Cindy Carol Smith, 30, also from Bonners Ferry, inside the car, unconscious but breathing when officers arrived at the scene moments later. When the call was made, an ambulance crew was already gathered at Boundary Community Hospital, and both an ambulance and the extrication unit were immediately dispatched to the scene. A second crew was scrambled and a MedStar helicopter was dispatched within moments of their arrival. EMTs were able to get Yoder transported to Community Hospital in short order, but both Wiyanna and Cindy had to be cut free from their mangled Chrysler with extrication equipment. Cindy, still unconscious, was tended to first, and EMTs were able to cut her free while MedStar was still about 20 minutes out, so the helicopter was diverted from the scene to the hospital and Cindy was transported. She died at Boundary Community Hospital. Wiyanna was the last victim freed, suffering a scalp laceration and other injuries and distraught over her mother's condition. She, too was transported to Boundary Community Hospital. That accident remains under investigation.
