Services will be held on Jan. 3, 2003 at 11 a.m. in the Bonners Ferry Funeral Home in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Melvin was born on Feb. 24, 1928 in Ismay, Mont. to Gale and Bernice (Jones) Cooper. They moved to the Boundary County area in 1934. He attended the Moravia Grade School and graduated from Bonners Ferry High School in 1946. He met Eileen (Merritt-Purdy) in high school. They were married in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho at the Hitching Post on June 1, 1948. This marriage produced three children Steven, Carol, and Dennis. Mel built their first home was on Ruby Creek. Skinny, as Mel was known by his friends later built a home in Bonners Ferry on the South Hill and he moved the family into it 1956. He claimed to know every nail and screw by name. Mel worked as a gyro logger, later working for the Great Northern Rail Road (now BNSFRR) for over 40 years and was T.V. repairman for 35 years working for Cooks Electric and S.S.& H. Inc. He would make his electronic skills available to his customers and friends whether it was Christmas, Thanksgiving or any other holiday. His honesty and integrity was never in question. Mel always found time to pursue his love of nature. The mountains and streams, camping, fishing and huckleberrying were at the top of his pleasures in between working. He really enjoyed RV-ing with friends and family. All were welcome around his campfires for fish fries or just playing cards. Melvin will be truly missed by all those who knew him. Husband, father, brother, grandfather, mentor, and friend we love you.
