She lived a long and rewarding life passing on at the age of 91 years. Bernice was born in Los Angeles, California on June 5, 1915, and at the age of 3 years her family moved to the small foothill community of Springville, Calif., where she resided on her grandparents homestead until she moved to Idaho to live with her daughter. She married Harold Espich in 1935 and they had two children, Patricia and Harold. They later divorced and she married Charles Henson in 1948 and he adopted her two children. Charles passed away in 1959. Bernice was a nurse at one of the last tuberculosis sanatoriums’ in California until it closed and became a long term care hospital where she worked until its closing. She then drove 60 miles each day to finish her nursing career and retired in 1972. In 1992, when she was no longer able to live alone, she moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho, to live with her daughter and be near most of her family. She loved her growing family of little ones and enjoyed spending time with them and spoiling them. They all affectionately called her “Nana”. Her son, Harold and wife Judy, would drive up twice a year from California to spend several days visiting her. She loved helping plan and prepare food for large family gatherings, and company could never leave the house without eating a meal first. The past year failing health had forced her to cut back on most activities and she had a hard time accepting that. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles, sister Vera Fraser, son Harold Henson, grandson Steven Rutherford, son-in-law Matthew Madden and grand son-in-law Larry Mendenhall. Her desire in recent weeks was to join them in heaven. She is survived by her daughter, Pat Madden of Bonners Ferry, granddaughter Karrol Johnson and husband Rick of Alaska, grandson Daniel Rutherford and wife Deann of Montana, granddaughter Kristie Mendenhall of Bonners Ferry, granddaughter Cassandra Rutherford Eckbert and husband Andy of Bonners Ferry, daughter-in-law Judy Henson, granddaughter Claudia Albrite and husband Jerry and grandson Brian Henson, all of California. She also leaves 14 great grandchildren and 16 great great-grandchildren, a niece Barbara and husband Harold and nephew George and wife Shirley, and several cousins. The wisdom and lessons her family and friends have learned from her are invaluable. She was truly the head of her family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She was a member of Crossroads Community Chapel and loved and counted on her Lord. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at the Church on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. with a luncheon to follow. All are welcome.
