Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan 3, 2003 at 2 p.m. in the United Methodist Church in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. On Monday, Jan. 6, 2003 a Memorial Service was held at 2 p.m. in the 1st United Methodist Church In Glasgow, Mont. Internment will be in the Highland Cemetery in Glasgow, Montana. Maryellen was born on Jan. 19, 1915 in Glasgow, Mont. to Forrest and Ruth (Jackson) Foust. She attended schools in Glasgow after which she married Wesley Patterson in 1931 in Glasgow, Maryellen remained at home with the family. Wesley preceded her in death on Jan. 29, 1947. On Nov. 15, 1947 she married David Barrett in Glasgow. They made their home in Glasgow and she worked for Sears for many years. David preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 1979. On Feb. 8, 1981 she married Vern Messick in Glasgow and they moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho where they made their home. Vern preceded her in death on Oct. 23, 1989. On April 2, 1993 she married John Hicks in Bonners Ferry, Idaho and they have made their home in Moyie Springs, Idaho until Maryellen’s death. Over the years she loved to read, help the elderly, sick and foster children, she communicated with family and friends, enjoyed sewing, growing flowers, decorated her home with flowers and loved collecting hats and showing them off. She will be remembered as a loving wife to John and as the “Hat Lady.” Survivors include her husband John Hicks of Moyie Springs Idaho; son Ralph Patterson of Aurora, Col.; Dennis Patterson of Sedro Woolley, Wash.; Daniel Patterson of Glasgow, Mont.; daughters; Martha Stanley of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; Ruth Cimino of Mt. Sinai, N.Y.; Margaret Swor of Springfield, ore.; sister Eva Luse of Glasgow, Mont., 24 grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother Melvin Foust, brother V.M. Foust, husbands Wesley Patterson, David Barrett, and Vern Messick.
