Higgins Kenneth E. Higgins, Jr., passed away April 15, 2007 at home in Post Falls, Idaho from cancer. Ken was born September 3, 1934 in Roberts, Idaho without the luxury of electricity and running water, in a small farmhouse to Kenneth and Elva (Rickman) Higgins. His mother passed away when Ken was only three years old, and he and his brother lived with his father and paternal grandparents until the age of 12, at which time his father remarried and moved to Arco, Idaho. Ken finished grammar school and graduated from Butte High School in 1953. After graduation, he attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Ill., was drafted in the US Army in 1954 and served in Germany until being honorably discharged in 1956. He then graduated Idaho State College Trade and Industrial School in 1958, he subsequently formed a construction company and performed electrical contracting prior to employment at the National Reactor Testing Station Automatic Energy Commission (AEC) at Scoville, Idaho. He worked at the AEC Commission for several years and then traveled throughout the United States working as an IBEW union industrial electrician prior to moving to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho in 1977. His career in North Idaho began with employment with Energy Products of Idaho. Afterwards he worked as an electrical inspector for the State of Idaho Department of Building Safety. Ken was a perfectionist in his career as an electrician as well as his many other construction talents. He built two residences by which he personally performed nearly all of the construction with impeccable workmanship. In addition, he built exquisite pieces of specialized furniture such as, a unique butcher block, toys, birdhouses, etc. In addition, to a log well house whereby he seasoned, stripped and notched the logs. Ken was an avid sportsman and thoroughly enjoyed big game hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and ATVing. He loved the traveling with his wife, “W’s,” they toured a large part of the United States making friends at nearly every stop. Ken was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Eagles, American Legion, Moose and BPOE (Elks). He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Wilma (Hughes) Higgins, daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Buddy Cooper, Hayden, Idaho; step-sons and wives, Michael and Susan, Bret and Becky, step-son Patrick Hughes, all of Montana, and ste-son Kelly Hughes of Post Falls, Idaho; brother, Charles Higgins, Omaha, Neb.; step-sister and husband, RaNae (Benson) and Bob Salon of Sacramento, Calif.; grandsons, James, Eric and Kenny Cooper of Hayden, Idaho, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, step-grand daughters and step-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mothers, Karma (Benson) and May (Peck) Higgins) Rickman.
