Leslie Final Rites Held For W. A. Leslie, Former Senator William A. Leslie, 88, resident of Bonners Ferry for some 65 years and former state senator from Boundary County, passed away last Thursday, Dec. 16, at Community hospital following a lingering illness. He was born Feb. 23, 1877 at Toronto, Canada, the son of William H. and Eliza Mitchel Leslie. He grew up and received his education at Gaylord, Mich. He came to Bonners Ferry in 1898 and first worked as a woods worker. He and Eva M. Grace were married here in September 1902, and they homesteaded on the North Bench until 1908. From 1903 until 1910 he served as county road supervisor (now known as county commissioner.) In 1908 he sold the homestead and operated the Leslie Real Estate offices until 1912. That year he became associated with the A.C. White Lumber Company and served as foreman of their lumber camps until 1922, when he began work with the Idaho forest service. He operated the Leslie Logging Company and a cattle ranch during the years 1926-42. In 1930 he joined with other interested parties and formed the REA in this area, serving as one of the first directors. He also founded the Leslie Springs Water Company and served as its first president. In 1930 he was elected and served two terms as state senator. In 1942 he and his wife went to Bremerton, Wash., and worked in shipyards until 1945 when he retired and returned to Bonners Ferry to make his home. He served 25 years as school trustee in Boundary County. In his retirement years he devoted his time to hunting and fishing and promoting wildlife conservation. He was a member of the Bonners Ferry ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Surviving are his widow, Eva, in Bonners Ferry; three sons, Alfred and Keith of Bonners Ferry, and Oliver of Glendora, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Alice Kruegel, Bonners Ferry; also 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. Grace Leslie, proceeded him in death in 1942. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at the LDS church with Bishop Charles Pluid officiating. The program included a family prayer by Bishop Pluid; invocation by Robert King; obituary, Bishop Pluid,; speaker, Don Jensen; benediction, Clarence Tenney, dedication of grave, Byron Baker. Vocal selections were sung by Mmes. Vena Jensen, Louise Zimmerman and Ramona Plato and organist was Mrs. Carol Pluid. Pallbearers were William Reed, Neal Larsen, Frank Ellersick, W. J. Nixon, Sr., Bill C. Tompkins and Don P. McGraw. Interment, under the direction of Hillcrest Memorial chapel, was in Grandview cemetery.
