Mason, 45 Former Naples resident Patricia A. Mason, 45, died June 25, 2007, at her home in Ruakaka, New Zealand. Patricia “Dr. Paddy” Ann Mason was born Jan. 24, 1962, in Tacoma, Wash., to Watsy H. Mason of San Antonio, Texas, and Marjorie Schenck Mason. The family lived in Alaska, Colorado, Utah and North Idaho. They kept a horse farm in Naples from 1973 to 1994. Paddy attended Valley View Elementary in Bonners Ferry, and Bonners Ferry High School. Richly endowed with talents, Paddy at 15 received a scholarship to study at St. George’s School in Spokane, Wash., where she pursued a college preparatory course and bloomed in several directions. After graduating in 1980, Paddy attended Reed College in Portland, Ore., and studied lalnguage and literature for two years. After taking a year to travel in Europe and Mexico, Paddy plunged into science studies at Evergreen College in Olympia, Wash. This was followed by a trip to Scotland to study horticulture, and then by her matriculation at the University of Glasgow, faculty of veterinary medicine, from which she graduated from with a BVMS degree in 1992. After a yearlong sting in Cambridge, United Kingdom, as a horse researcher, Paddy became a country vet in Mid Wales, and practiced there until 1995. She then moved to New Zealand and settled in the Whangarei area, taking a New Zealand citizenship. In 2005, Paddy established a veterinary practice in Ruakaka. Paddy embraced her new life in New Zealand and enjoyed her days to the fullest extent, working as a veterinarian and spending her free time diving, horseback riding, sailing, spear fishing, skydiving and artwork, in addition to caring for, breeding and training wild mountain ponies. She had a great love for adventure, was a friend to many and was renowned for her professional skill and dedication, keep insight and unique sense of humor. Paddy is survived by her sisters, Virginia Mason of Phoenix and Sandra Comer of Delta, Colo.; and a brother, Scott Mason, of Kyoto, Japan. She is also survived by 19 animals, including dogs, cats, birds, horses and ponies. A memorial service was held at One Tree Point Yacht Club in Ruakaka on July 6, 3007.
