Schlette was born in Clayton County, Iowa, on July 15, 1882. He came west when he was 21 and settled in the Curley Creek district, where he resided for many years with his parents. During the years before he was elected to the position of county judge, he was employed by the forest service and farmed his tract of land in the Curley Creek district. On September 7, 1927 he was married to Florence Bellmar at Sandpoint. In 1930 he lost an arm while working with a wood saw. During his tenure as probate judge he won the respect of a widening acquaintance who admired his devotion to his work and his characteristic of never being too busy to offer assistance and aid whenever possible. He served during the war years on the selective service committee and on termination of the war was reemployment committeeman for the county. He spent considerable time and effort to place many local veterans and aided them with his advice and counsel when it was requested. On the occasion of the observance of the hundredth anniversary of Christianity by the Kootenai Indians at the Kootenai Mission on May 13, Judge Schlette was one of the principal speakers. At that time, speaking in a philosophical mood, he urged his listeners to work together and to be kind in each other. So far as is known, his widow is the only surviving relative.
