She was born April 3, 1885 in Austria-Hungary (now Czechoslovakia) to Joseph and Barbara Chervenka. Internment was at Grandview Cemetery. Mrs. Smith came to the United States at the age of three years, sailing from Hamburg, Germany, with her mother, father and older sister. After landing at New York City, they migrated to North Dakota where the family homesteaded. On May 31, 1904, she married John Isaac Smith and Grafton, North Dakota. Their first child, Ray, was born in Park River North Dakota. From there they moved to Montana where Ethel, Gordon and Arthur were born. In 1918 the family moved to Bonners Ferry where the 3 youngest children, Earl, Willfred and Hollice were born. The family continued to live in Bonners Ferry for many years where Mr. Smith worked for the Great Northern Railway. During World War II, five sons served in the armed forces. After her husband's death in 1945, Mrs. Smith lived in Spokane, Richland, Washington, Bonners Ferry and most recently Coeur d'Alene. Gardening and crocheting were two of her favorite hobbies. Surviving are four sons, Arthur Smith and Hollace Smith of Bonners Ferry, Earl Smith of The Dalles, Oregon, Willfred Smith of Richland, Wash.; and one daughter, Ethel (Mrs. G.R.) Myers of Post Falls. Also surviving are two sisters, Rose Grendle of Phoenix, Arizona and Mary Walter of Portland Oregon, one brother, Joseph Chervenka of Mission City, B.C. and 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Isaac Smith, and two sons, Ray Smith and I. Gordon Smith.
