Spurgeon George Oliver Spurgeon, 84, passed away at the local hospital June 10th. He had been a patient there one week. He was born April 6, 1884 in Osborn, Kans., the son of George and Esther Sweeney Spurgeon. He made his home in the mid-west, and in 1913 he married Anna Buck in Iowa. She preceded him in death in 1932 and Mr. Spurgeon accepted the responsibility of being the sole parent to their seven children. In 1944 he moved his family to Bonners Ferry and in 1946, he married Florence Clute at Libby. She preceded him in death in 1963. He was employed as a mill worker, then worked in shipyards during World War II. He later was custodian at the First National Bank of Bonners Ferry for many years. He is survived by three sons, Frank of Bonners Ferry, Claude of West Covina, Calif., and Dwight of Ft. Bragg, Calif., three daughters, Mrs. Irene Burton and Mrs. Bessie Barrett of Bonners Ferry, and Mrs. Trany A. Brindes of LA Puente, Calif.; five step-daughters, Mrs. Pearl Purinton and Mrs. Myrtle Hoagland, "Bonners Ferry, Mrs. Florence Workman of Post Falls, Mrs. Grace Brudeseth, St. Maries, and Mrs. Estella Mae Laird of Clifton Heights, Pa.; a brother, Roy of St. Joseph, Mo.;' a sister, Mrs. Belle Medford of Longview, Wash.; also 40 grandchildren and 64 great-grandchildren. He was the adopted "grandpa" to many youngsters in Bonners Ferry. he was preceded in death by a son, Charles, who was killed in France during World War II. Funeral services were held June 15th, at Hillcrest memorial chapel, with Pastor Donald Hippe officiating. Burial was in Grandview cemetery. Pallbearers were Edward Purinton, Donald Hoagland, Sr., Lon Huggins, Paul Norman, Robert R. Stephens and Carrel Hurst.
