He was born in Des Moines, Iowa on Dec. 22, 1913. He was the son of Alvin and Sarah Swaine. The first grandchild of the families, he grew up with several aunts and a grandmother nearby. As a boy, Dick delivered newspapers and fresh donuts to customers. He graduated from Roosevelt High School and attended two years at Drake University in Des Moines. His last two years of college were spent at Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn. Dick graduated in 1937 with a degree in business and economics. Dick worked in transportation most of his life, beginning in Des Moines with Des Moines Transportation Company. He married Margaret McCartney on Oct. 8, 1937 in Des Moines. They had three daughters, Carolyn, Janet and Susan, and one son, James, Jr. They moved to Moline, Ill. In 1943 when Dick was employed by Standard Forwarding Trucking Company until he retired. They were active in the United Methodist Church in Moline. Dick and Margaret enjoyed 48 years of marriage. They spent many years after retirement, traveling the U.S. and Canada in their motor home and bicycling. Dick’s passion was all kinds of transportation, especially freight trains. He enjoyed the stock market and was an avid bird watcher. Puttering around the yard was also a consuming pass time. Adventurous by nature, Dick and Margaret moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho in 1996 and built a home near their daughter Janet. He remained in good health until late 2002. They attended Springs of Living Water Free Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, daughters Carolyn Harrison and husband Terry; Janet Allen and husband Red; and Susan Bousson and husband Stan; son James, Jr. and wife Sandy; granddaughters Janet Dektar and husband John; Karin Salzgeber; Jenny Rieger and husband Gary; Heide Swaine and husband Greg Fast; and Kelly Swaine; grandsons Christian Allen and wife Lori; Karl Allen and wife Tina; and six great-grandchildren. Dick is also survived by his sisters Patricia Newman; and Margaret Milligan and husband Floyd; and his brother Howard and wife Sue.
