Johnson and Deputy Sheriff Steve Mahoney to Springdale Wednesday afternoon to take charge of the remains. There they found that Charles Dayley had uncovered the skeleton of a young child while digging a cellar. Little remained of the child except a few bones and a portion of the skull. The body had evidently been interred by Emigrants in early days, as the skeleton was found about 50 feet from the deep wagon ruts of the old Oregon Trail. Apparently this body had been placed in a rough coffin hastily made from the side board of an old prairie wagon. The wood portion of the improvised coffin had decayed almost to dust, but rusted irons used in those days to reinforce the wagon beds remained to give evidence of the kind of coffin used. The Childs remains were reinterred and covered over, and the little one again took its place in the great cemetery of the many hundreds that spent their lives to win the West and lie in hasty graves along this trail. No evidence or clue of name, or even initials was found with the bones Additional Comments: File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/id/cassia/newspapers/skeleton717gnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/idfiles/ File size: 1.9 Kb
