S. Soule brought a chunk of coal down from their claims last Wednesday that is about a foot wide by 18 inches long and a foot thick, being as large as he could bring in the buggy. They broke the piece up so as to get it into the buggy, it being large enough to make four such as he brought away. He says they now have 4 1/2 feet of coal above water and they think there is nearly 3 feet under water, the vein dipping a little and there not being a ditch cut low enough to run the water from the lower part of the vein. There is a greater depth of earth over the coal that is being taken out now and the quality seems to be correspondingly better, indicating that as good coal as is found anywhere, will be discovered when worked back further, as the vein extends right into the mountain. The fact that the vein has increased in thickness as followed back into the mountain is almost conclusive evidence of a large body.
