The actual cause of the suicide is not known, although it is said that McConnell had been despondent for several days. McConnell, who was unmarried, used a shotgun, and blew off the top of his head. Jess McConnell and a camptender were cooking breakfast, two other sheepherders being out looking after a part of the herd. The camptender walked a short distance from the camp to call the other men, running back to the wagons when he heard a shot. First it was thought that the shooting was accidental. A coronor's jury impaneled during the afternoon, decided that the man had committed suicide. Jess McConnel is survived by five brothers and an uncle, Charles McConnell of Boise. The body was brought to Emmett. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in the Methodist Church, Rev. Quinn occupying the pulpit. The remains were interred in Riverside Cemetery.
