Fairview Cemetery, Fairview, Idaho, ID Submitted by: Penny Bennett Casey ****************************************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ****************************************************************** Fairview Cemetery is located approximately 4 miles north/northeast of Grangeville on the Luke's Gulch Road. (The back gravel road to Stites, used to be the old Stage Road). The cemetery was platted in 1886. The original Plat was found in the Idaho County Courthouse in Grangeville. The Deed was also found in the Courthouse and was recorded July 24, 1886. Due to the length of it (6 pages), I will merely sum up what it states. It is dated June 12th, 1886. Executed in the Territory of Idaho, County of Idaho by John C. Gelbach and Della M. Gelbach. It states that they have selected a site for a Cemetery on the land that they own, to be called Fair View Cemetery. They elected J.S. Kincaid, F.V. Turner and F.H. Fenn, Trustees thereof to hold the trust until their successors have been elected in accordance with the rules and by-laws of the association. The Gelbach's, in consideration of the sum of fifty (50) dollars and a free certificate to a lot of their choosing in the cemetery, do sell and convey the tract or parcel of land. There is a detailed description of the chiseled corner stones and measurements. It also states that the trustees shall first sell at public auction, such lots as may be purchased and that the minimum price of lots shall be five (5) dollars. * All lots can be sold except lots 4,5,6,7,8,9,10 & 11 in Block B which said lots shall be reserved as a Potter's Field or Strangers burying ground. (*note: the Gelbach's also owned the Poor Farm, which they purchased in 1895. They must have left the above listed lots open for the Poor Farm until the Hillcrest Cemetery was established in 1937, which was located much closer to the Poor Farm. It also states that the owners of the lots would receive a "certificate of ownership". It also provided further, that no Church or other building for Religious purposes shall ever be erected within the Cemetery enclosure. The money's received from the sale of lots will be for the upkeep and beautifying of the grounds. The Cemetery is divided into 4 blocks, A,B,C,D. Each block having 21 lots, Each lot having 8 grave plots. I have found a few that have up to 11 plots. The following is the list of Names, with Grave #, Lot, & Block. This list came from Mike Bear at the Cemetery District, who was kind enough to allow me to photocopy the cemetery book. And also from a list that Betty Farris Litchfield had from doing family research. It does not include stone information and is not completely up-to-date. On the next trip I make to Grangeville, I will try to add dates and stone information. If you know of a burial not listed, please forward any new information you may have.
