John P. Harriman was born in Kanawha county, West Virginia, on Sept. 15, 
1852.  In his early manhood he left his native state, going to Missouri to 
live, where, on September 15, 1875, he was married to Miss Kate Spurlock.
  In 1879, the young couple decided to try their fortunes in the state of 
Idaho.  The journey took exactly four months to make, and on August 29 they 
reached the vicinity near the present site of Fenn, Idaho.
  During the entire trip this group of devout people did not travel once on a 
Sunday, but always stopped and kept the day holy, having their worship 
services right in their camp.
  Settling near the town of Fenn, these pioneers endured the rigors of the 
early settlers, and here their only child Laura, now Mrs. Henry Telcher, was 
born.
  After some years spent on the farm they moved to Grangeville to live and 
here it was that Mrs. Harriman passed away on March 23, 1911.
  Four years later Mr. Harriman remarried, this time his bride being Miss 
Lillian Hansford, whom he had known as a boy in the state of West Virginia; 
she, too, passing away at Grangeville on Dec. 29, 1933.  From this time on Mr. 
Harriman made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Telcher, until his death.
  Very early in life Mr. Harriman was converted and united with the Baptist 
church, to which he remained loyal to the end of his life.  He was also an 
honored member of the Odd Fellows lodge.
  Mr. Harriman was active up until about a year before his death, when an 
affliction rendered him unable to get about as usual.  A few days before his 
death his health failed so that he had to be taken to the local hospital, 
where he failed rapidly until his death on Dec. 24, 1941.
  He leaves to mourn his departure the daughter, Mrs. Telcher, one grand-
daughter, Mrs. Weston Henry, two great grandchildren, Harriman and Shirley 
Henry, all of Grangeville, and one sister, Mrs. Nannie E.  ???? of Cottonwood, 
and a number of nieces and nephews.
