William Ray Harris was born August 26, 1923 in Grangeville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Harris. He attended the local schools, graduating from Grangeville High School with the class of 1941, then taking employment in the City Bakery, where he worked until August 1944 when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, taking his boot training at Farragut, and service on the sea. He was discharged in April 1946 and returned to his position in the City Bakery. On August 3, 1946, he married Emma Jean Wilkins of Grangeville by Rev. William E. Harris. Others surviving besides his wife are his mother, Mrs. Emily Harris in General Hospital; daughter, Kathleen Rae; one sister, Mrs. Edgar Klaus of Spokane; three brothers, Captain Kenneth Harris, U.S. Marines in China; Rex of Boles, and Wesley of Grangeville. Rev. William E. Harris officiated at the funeral services and military burial was in Prairie View Cemetery with the local Veterans of Foreign Wars firing squad firing the salute and Grover Pollan playing taps. Mrs. Pearl Campbell sang hymns accompanied by Mrs. Marie Green at the organ. Pallbearers were Sam Layne, Kenneth Earp, Ranford Russell, Richard Warden, George Wikoff and Harold Davis, all of whom were fellow workmen in the bakery with Bill except Mr. Earp.
