Klapprich, a retired water superintendent and a leading citizen at Cottonwood for many years, died Thursday morning at St. Mary’s hospital here of causes related to age. He was 98. He received a citizen’s award in 1958 for increasing the city water supply during his 12 years as Cottonwood’s wastewater superintendent. He was a founder of the Cottonwood Community Credit Union and served as manager until 1974. He was born to Mary and Peter Klapprich August 6, 1888 at Bismarck, North Dakota and he attended schools in North Dakota. The family moved to Idaho in 1902 and homesteaded three miles west of Cottonwood. He farmed the family homestead until 1937 when he moved to Cottonwood. He worked as a blacksmith and as a clerk for the Cottonwood Grange Co. before becoming water superintendent in 1948. The city had a problem with water scarcity before he was superintendent, but he was able to solve the problem by bringing in a hydrologist and locating good areas for wells. He was superintendent until his retirement in 1960. He married Martha Schmidt at Cottonwood December 21, 1948. She died in 1976. He was a member of the Catholic Church. He is survived by many nieces and nephews. A rosary was recited on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Holy Cross Catholic Church at Keuterville. The funeral mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross with the Rev. Henry Wolozenas as celebrant. The pallbearers were Gus Kopczynski, George Jascoviak, Ron Schnider, David Klapprich, Delmar Rad, Frank Terhaar and Ted Klapprich. Burial was at the Keuterville Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to St. Mary’s Hospital at Cottonwood. Uhlorn Funeral Home of Cottonwood was in charge of arrangements.
