(Gene) Packer, 88 Joseph E. (Gene) Packer died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006, at St. Mary's Hospital in Cottonwood. He was born Oct. 18, 1917, attended school near his home on Battle Ridge and graduated at Stites. He worked on the family ranch until 1941. During this World War II era he left home, traveled to Los Angeles, Calif., and trained to work in an airplane factory. He liked to elaborate that he worked at the Douglas factory installing the tail sections horizontal and vertical stabilizers and hanging wings on C-54s.
